Photography is my way of entering the lives of others to examine the human condition and to connect with it. Sometimes my photos tell an intimate story and other times they offer a glimpse of larger political and social struggles, but each photo reveals the common humanity of the peo-ple I depict. There is a certain bleakness in my subject matter but the people pictured are exam-ples of hope and perseverance in extreme circumstances. Hope shines through, whether it is in the plight of displaced people in Darfur surrounded by uncertainty and war, the love of a mother caring for her autistic daughter in rural Maine, efforts of communities to reclaim deforested mountainsides in Haiti, or immigrant day-laborers struggling to support their families. Some of their struggles end sadly, some are never fully told, but each story begs remembrance in a rush-ing world.
