Protest, Various

The World Economic Forum, New York City, 2002: The World Economic Forum was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Thousands of people and groups organized a protest march in the streets of the city that culminated in front of the closed doors of the hotel. The protests were inspired by what is perceived as the closed-off nature of the meetings. Major economic and financial decisions are made at the World Economic Forum by non-elected and elected officials which effects the lives of many people in the world.

The World Social Forum, Caracas, Venezuela, 2006: The World Social Forum has been a place where many marginalized groups have come together to seek solutions to common challenges, widespread injustices and vast inequalities. It allows for a working dialogue counterpoising mainstream economic and political arguments. The meetings are comprised of human-rights activists, indigenous people fighting for access to water and just about anyone without a voice. Begun in Brazil almost a decade ago, these meetings are now held in many places around the world-from Nairobi in Africa to Detroit, Michigan. There has been some criticism that nongovernmental organizations have taken precedence over local grassroots movements by securing limited funding and support to attend the Forum.

Anti-war Protest, Roxbury, MA, 2006: In Roxbury Massachusetts, hundreds of locals who opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan held a demonstration in the center of Roxbury, then they marched along the symbolic Malcolm X Boulevard to downtown Boston.
